katpuke

katpuke, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I am sure the beer would be O.K., sort of an average Australian lager, according to some reviews I read. It was more the door that just seemed to open out of the wall. No porch, or entrance way, possibly just an afterthought, and a way out.

takeaway or dining in

takeaway or dining in, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

It is not expensive, the food comes fast and it is spicey, just the way I like it. And I like the bright lights and the way things look just on dusk.

street corner

street corner, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

Here are four examples of urban vernacular architectural building styles. I have nothing else to say about it except what I like the most are the chalk marks on the footpath.

automatic

automatic, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

This looks like a happy sort of Sunday driving car. The warm yellow/brown tinted green can fill half the frame and does not seem to overpower the image. Where as on green foliage I have to wind down the saturation or it can seem too much.

black board

black board, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

The rubbed out chalk on the black board has a look of expressionism about it, and the flowers look totally false, but they may well be real. It certainly felt like a place of “found” art, so I took this photo.

girl running

girl running, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

Devon Road winds itself up hill with a series of narrow u bends. The houses tend to be old and perched precariously in the corners of the bends. Looking down one can see the odd person making their way up. I usually find something along here to photograph. In this case a girl running.

dolphin in the window

dolphin in the window, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I was walking past Victoria University when I looked in this window. There was a plant not watered, a yellow rope and a dolphin. I don't know what any of it meant, though below the dorsal fin, was masking tape, with the words “Dolph Lungdren”.

extra room

extra room, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I like the idea of an upper room with a view. And a mess of wires makes it even more interesting.

No. 9

No. 9, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

A stroll around the industrial part of Lyall Bay and I found this bus, a long way from home.

the wall

the wall, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

My wife, myself and her sister visited the “flying saucer cafĂ©”. They then went off to the big store to buy a mop. This gave me the opportunity to go for a walk in this mostly industrial block of warehouses. There were big spaces, big buildings and the odd little touch of imaginative design.

tow away

tow away, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

This is sort of a back street, not much here. The sort of place one walks through to go some place else. But standing just in one spot at a certain time of day and it looked OK. And I'm always happy to photograph a cabbage tree.

keep out, come in

keep out, come in, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

On the left a hazardous area, and looking right there is a church. When I'm walking with a camera, it is just the way things look that interest me, so I will not draw any analogies, it is just what is there, that I have recorded.

building

building, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

It gives an impression of being a building within a building. The aluminium joinery enclosed by the old outer shell. I think the orange building on the right gives a clue to where this is going. And then I probably would not have noticed it at all if it wasn't for the yellow pennants.

stained footpath

stained footpath, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

The remnants of an elegant past remain as in a few tiles. I do not know what was here, nor what it may become. I tend to photograph where the light picks out something, and I see a photograph in my imagination, then I think about these things after.

ciao, hello, goodbye #2

Murals come and go but this one has always been nice to walk by.

ciao, hello, goodbye

ciao, hello, goodbye, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I will finish the week much the way I started. This building is mostly going, but some may remain. I think buildings are at their most interesting, in between transitions. And the only thing that may remain is a photograph.

Wednesday 12 March 2008

three ply & street scene

I was waiting for my wife, she was in a shop. Looking across the street, there seemed to be a photo here. Looking now, it must be the three ply board, posters, sprinkler stop valves and the mannequins do tie in together.

Tuesday 11 March 2008

shut the door

shut the door, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

Looking towards Tory Street, and the Moore and Wilson store. The building has a nice angled mirror section. The morning sun was catching it nicely, then a hand came out of the car and shut the door.

Monday 10 March 2008

a view from a yard

a view from a yard, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

It was just the back of warehouses, a car sales, and some apartments. Not much to photograph, until I stood in the yard, and added a stop sign, car, and a baton fence. It then seemed O.K. I couldn't add much more.

scooter

scooter, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

It was first the restaurant door, looked so strong in early morning light, I adjusted my position till the the yellow pole was right, then a scooter, it was not going to be there for long, so I pressed the shutter.

the future

the future, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

All is revealed. What was once fine Italian dining will be apartments.

almost the past

almost the past, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

The changes will involve this building. The façade though will probably be retained, which is nice I guess.

be happy

be happy, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

There may be changes coming to this corner on Tory and Vivian Streets. I am not sure if it involves this building or not. But this happy poster needs to be photographed for sure, in case it disappears. It is a bit scruffy here, but there is always something positive to see, like the way the concrete has been grooved, to go with the bird.

Wednesday 5 March 2008

back yard big plant.

back yard big plant., originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

Back yards can be more interesting then front gardens. More real, everything laid bare. Especially when there is a big blue plant that is enclosing the house, and the lights have to be on all day.

Tuesday 4 March 2008

garage, house, clothesline

It was overcast . The house seemed grey and brown. But the clothes pegs were cheerful, pink, green and yellow.

Monday 3 March 2008

something very yellow

something very yellow, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

This photo was taken in the lull between the end of the weekend and the beginning of another week. The photo also documents the disappearing of old buildings and the beginning of new ones. But mainly for me it is a street scene made up of shapes, lines, shadows and something very yellow.

Sunday 2 March 2008

chopsticks

chopsticks, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

It had been wet all day. I had not taken any photos, too much rain to walk around. We needed to get out for a while, so we had Chicken Jhalfrazi at “Curry Heaven”. It was not yet dark so we drove to Island Bay to see the sea, I thought there may be a photo there. On the way back, the photo was here, “chopsticks takeaways”.

hanging around a bar

hanging around a bar, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I didn't stay here too long, just a photo to record the old world charm, and then I walked on.
