cable car sign, wet intersection

If it is wet and I want to take a photo, I often find one on this corner, I found one last February here: rain
I seem to gravitate to places I like to be, if I am in the right frame of mind, I take a photo. Another place in town may not move me at all no matter how many times I go there. Not sure why that is.

ain't no sunshine

ain't no sunshine, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

There was a howling southerly, felt like it was coming from the Antarctic. It was raining. The weekend was all most over, and I still had no photos, I had to go out and see what I could find.

indoor garden

indoor garden, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

This was once part of an Italian restaurant, probably a place to sit and have a wine while contemplating the menu. It will be soon a high rise apartment block. I have photographed around here before Trompe-l'œil #1

broken furniture

broken furniture, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I was walking around the streets, about lunchtime, when I found this shop that sold broken furniture...I took a photo of this retro piece of furniture, and wondered who might buy it.

small abode with television

It is only as long as it is wide, almost square. The neighbours foliage is growing over. The curtains are drawn. There is satellite television. I like the idea that it was once a shop. I can only guess what it is like now.

compelling covers

or "what Wellingtonians like to read", can can be disappointing if you read the articles. It is the colour combination that I like, the complimentary colour in the middle. The dairy got it just right.

garage, gas valves, electroluxxe

I don't know what this is about, it's just what you see when walking down the street. You look in a garage and there is a bit of old rope, gas regulator, ball valves, and a poster advertising the “North Shore Pony Club”

additions & alterations

New Zealanders like to change their houses, if they add a bit here it will be better, there is always room for improvement.

yellow pole with red sign

I know it is not subtle, but I just couldn't help it, I'm just thinking it is like a big yellow stripe, it makes one look left or right.

suburb on a hillside

The flag sort of holds the scene up, but for me the interest is how in Wellington they put houses in the most unlikely places.

sun striking a building

I am tempted in the weekend to sit for a while and think about photography, but it is best to just go out early and do it, leaving the thinking for later. Here the sun has come up over the Eastern hills, and beginning to touch the top of the buildings.

looking at aro street

looking at aro street, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I generally just walk down a street taking photos of whatever looks interesting, I look for shapes and forms and try to see them in a two dimensional rectangle, it is strange because the compositions change with each step I take. And if it seems a little dull on the street maybe it is a good idea to step off the footpath and look back towards the street.

grim, neon

grim, neon, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

I have often paused here and taken a photo with this sign. Usually within the context of the surroundings, but have not found a composition that works. I think this one is O.K., maybe the building opposite helps. It reminds me of an exhibition that encouraged me to take up digital photography. They were large inkjet prints of out of focus apartment blocks, the artist was Heidi Specker, you can see some of her work here: www.heidespecker.de

narrow & simple living

narrow & simple living, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

These cottages fascinate me, I like the idea of living in something plain and simple. They were built for a simpler time, when a chair and a book was enough. I guess they have adapted though with flat screen television.

blue curtain with stars

I photographed this building through a gap between other buildings. It seems to be alone among the trees but it is on the edge of the inner city, with the green belt as a backdrop. I think it was the blue curtain that captured my eye. I am always curious of peoples surroundings.

St George

St George, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

This building is now used for university student accommodation. It was once a Hotel, and maybe it's biggest claim to fame is that the Beatles stayed here in June 1964, you can read about it here Wellington – The Beatles. I have taken a photo from this spot before but a different version and subject, see woman & lizard

sky

sky, originally uploaded by Lester Ralph Blair.

One of the elements of my photography is the weather, I photograph mostly outside on the streets, and I tend to follow where the light is, and the weather on this day was big clouds sweeping over the hills so I just pointed the camera up, I do like the look of trees against the winter sky.

family

Occasionally my two daughters come over and we go out for a coffee. They walk and talk with their mum, but I usually get side tracked taking photos along the way and get left behind. So much so today that I was able to photograph them down on the road below.
